Counseling is very important part of USMLE Step 2 CS exam.
Counseling includes but not limited to
Addressing patient's concerns
Details about their diagnosis and management
Psychological Support
Legal Rights (in case of abuse)
Encouraging healthy life style
Quitting any unhealthy activities
Medication compliance
Importance of investigations
Proper follow up
Parent of guardian counseling for minors
Ethical Issues
Suicide Contract etc.
Counseling has it own points in your overall score and is quite necessary to get a passing score in the exam.
TIP: For IMGs I would recommend them to write their own counseling senteces and practice them over and over again.
Keep in mind that you just have to tell the simulated patinet that you know where counselling is needed. Just keep your sentences short, simple and handy.
