Smoking Cessation Couseling

Smoking is the most common bad habit found in the simulated patients.

Ask about smoking from all patients during the PMH (past medical history)

Don't forget to ask about the duration of smoking and amount of cigarettes smoked per day.

Use appropriate transition sentence before asking about it.

So you can Ask Like this:

So Mr XYZ, Now I am going to ask a few questions about your personal habits and life style; is it OK with you?

Let the patient answer, then ask

Do You smoke?

if he says yes,

then ask How much?

let him answer

then ask For How long?

Note it down if you fear forgetting it, write it down on the notes sheet provided. I noted in PY format eg (12 PY or pack year)

then ask other two Personel History Questoins

Do you drink alcoholic bevearges?

let him answer

then ask Have you ever used any recreational drugs ?

Suppose he is just a smoker, so now counsel him in a few simple sentences.

Make an eye contact and say

Mr XYZ being your physician I am very much concerned about your health and I need to tell you that smoking is not good for your health. It can damage your heart, it can damage your lungs and may even cause caner.

Pause to note his response and then continue

I would like you to quit it as soon as possible, are you willing to quit ?

see response and appreciate if its positive.

if you need any help in that let me know, I am here to assist you.

Tip: For smoking, you have to

1) ask a screening question

2) note the amount and duration

3) show your concern

4) tell him aobut the health hazards

5) advise to quit.

6) check his willingness to quit

7) encourage and appreciate if it is positive

8) offer help and assistance
